A viral claim circulating on social media, mainly on WhatsApp that MTN Nigeria is giving out 10GB free data and ₦3,000 Airtime voucher to all Nigerians to celebrate the Nigeria Super Eagles.
This is coming after the Super Eagle’s triumph over the Bafana Bafana of South Africa in the Semi-final of the ongoing Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) on the 7th of February at Stade Bouake, Côte D’ivoire.
The website shows the group picture of the Nigeria Super Eagle’s squad with the word ‘FINAL’ scripted on it. It has the official logo of MTN at the right side and CAF logo at the left side.
Also, the link provided https://free-gb-data.org/afconmtn.html#1707506036971 requires the user to complete a 4-stage procedure in order to access the benefit. The first stage is for one to provide MTN number; the second is sharing to 5 groups or 15 friends on WhatsApp before one would be allowed to enter the ‘activation’ page.
It is due to the skepticism that this claim has caused that FactCheck Africa opts to verify the authenticity of this website and set the record straight.
Verification
FactCheckAfrica’s verification shows that the claim is False!
When we analyzed the link offered by the website on scamdoc, the tool gave it a very bad rating of 3% and warned that the domain name is very recent (less than 6 months) and the owner of the domain name associated with the site is hidden in the Whois database.
Conclusion
FactCheckAfrica’s verification proved that the link and the information the claim propagates is false. Also, FactCheckAfrica has been constantly publishing reports on phishing website to keep unsuspecting members of society informed.
