On January 4, operatives of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) raided the headquarters of the Dangote Group in connection with an ongoing investigation into forex allocations in the country.
In a rush to break the news or make a post about the development, some online newspapers and social media users reported that EFCC raided the BUA cement office in Lagos.
Dangote Cement and BUA cement are two of the most popular cement brands in Nigeria. The brands are owned by business mogul Aliko Dangote, the second richest man in Africa and Abdul Samad Rabiu, a Nigerian billionaire businessman, respectively.
Some of the online newspapers here, here and here claimed BUA cement was also raided alongside Dangote cement headquarters by EFCC operatives.
Some social media users also claimed that both Dangote cement and BUA cement offices were raided.
Verification
FactCheck Africa’s findings revealed that credible news media reported the EFCC raid on Dangote cement headquarters.
While some online newspapers reported that EFCC operatives visited the BUA cement office in Lagos, the company has dismissed the claim.
BUA cement, in a statement titled ‘clarification: public notice’ posted on X, stated that EFCC operatives did not visit its office.
Conclusion
Findings show that EFCC operatives visited the Dangote cement headquarters.
However, claims that the BUA cement office was also raided have since been dismissed by the company.
