In the wee hours of March 2024, the Niger State Government renamed the Abubakar Imam International Airport in Minna, the state’s capital, after President Bola Ahmed Tinubu ahead of his visit to the state.
Meanwhile, an internet user on Facebook, identified as Mudasir Abefe, has posted an image of the airport, claiming that it is situated in Ibadan, Oyo State.
As of press time, the post has amassed over 1,300 likes, and more than 100 comments and has been shared 45 times.
While some of the commenters believe it to be true, others labeled it as a fake narrative.
Due to the evident disagreement over the post in the comment section, FactCheckAfrica is conducting this fact-check report to set the record straight.
Verification
FactCheckAfrica discovered that the word ‘Minna’ — which is the capital city of Niger State was — inscribed at the tail end of the image.
With a keyword search, we observed that multiple media reports indicated that the Bola Ahmed Tinubu International Airport is in Niger State as seen here, here, and here.
Furthermore, we asked MyAIFactChecker, a digital verification tool, the location of Bola Ahmed Tinubu International Airport and it confirmed our earlier findings.
“Bola Ahmed Tinubu International Airport is located in Minna, Niger State, Nigeria. The airport was formerly known as Dr Abubakar Imam International Airport before being renamed in honor of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu,” the tool explained.
