VERIFICATION
FactcheckAfrica, using Google Lens – a tool to trace the image back – found the original news report by the Channels Television, showing the Vice President Kashim Shettima commissioning the newly renovated ₦21 billion Vice President’s residence on June 7th, 2024.
Meanwhile, media reports were confirming that he [Kashim Shettima] is yet to occupy the renovated building after almost a year of commission, which can be seen here and here. However, no credible mainstream media reported that he had moved out of the presidential residence.
The reasons for the vice president’s decision are unknown to the media, but public outrage had erupted before and after the Federal Government allocated billions of naira to renovate the presidential building.
This fact-checker tracked a recent political shift within the All Progressive Congress (APC), the ruling party in which Kashim Shettima and his principal, Bola Ahmed Tinubu, have run since the 2023 general election.
As the party gears up for the 2027 Presidential election, it was reported that governors unanimously adopted Tinubu as the APC candidate for the 2027 election, while they did not mention the Vice President during the endorsement, raising rhetorical questions in the public domain.
Also, a recent summit for APC stakeholders from the North-East geopolitical zone became rowdy in Gombe State after APC North-East Vice Chairman, Mustapha Salihu, named Tinubu as the party’s sole candidate for re-election without mentioning Vice President Kashim Shettima.
On Channels Television, the National Secretary of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), Ajibola Basiru, revealed that Tinubu’s running mate for the 2027 Presidential election will be concluded after the party’s national convention.
CONCLUSION
There is no credible reports that Kashim Shettima had moved into the Presidential residence; Channels Television’s viral image was edited to spark a political debate.
