Verdict: Misleading

Full Text:

The viral video purportedly showing Peter Obi leading a protest in Abuja is misleading. The video, which has been widely shared across social media platforms, inaccurately depicts an event from a few months ago as a recent occurrence.

The video is captioned by many as:”Peter Obi leads protest in Abuja against government policies,” suggesting recent activity. However, the video does not correspond to any protest led by Peter Obi yesterday.

Verification:

FactCheckAfrica conducted a thorough verification of the video using reverse video search processes and video analysis techniques. The original footage, sourced from Channels Television’s YouTube page (2:23), shows Peter Obi’s visit to the Labour Party headquarters months ago. During this visit, Obi mediated a clash between the Labour Party and the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC).

Additionally, conventional news outlet The Punch has debunked the claim, confirming that the video was from a previous event and not a recent protest. Other Twitter users, including Dr. Mo (@Drmopaul), have also highlighted the misleading nature of the video, explaining that it was selectively edited to create a false narrative.

Original footage from the Channels Television YouTube page clearly shows Peter Obi addressing the Labour Party and NLC members, with no indication of a protest being led by him in Abuja yesterday. The video was edited to mislead the audience and create unnecessary controversy.

Conclusion:

The claim that Peter Obi led a protest in Abuja yesterday, as depicted in the viral video, is false. The video is from a previous event at the Labour Party headquarters, where Obi was mediating a clash. It is crucial to verify the authenticity of content before sharing it to prevent the spread of misinformation.
