A Facebook post by Manchester City football club has claimed that Julian Alvarez was the only player to wear the World Champion Badge at both club and international level.

Julian Alvarez on Friday, December 22nd added to his trophy cabinet. His brace contributed to Man City’s win over Fluminense to become the Club World Cup winner. This earned Man City the badge of a world champion.

Following the event, Man City posted on Facebook, “ Julian Alvarez, the only player to wear the World Champion badge at both club and international level!”

The claim has garnered over 50, 000 likes, 1,100 comments, and 817 shares as of December 28, 2023.

The FIFA World Champion Badge was introduced in 2008 by FIFA to award the reigning world champions of FIFA competitions at both the national team level and club team level.

Verification 

Findings by FactCheck Africa show that the claim is false.

Sportmanors revealed that Raphael Varane, a current Manchester United player has accomplished the feat in 2018.

Raphael Varane was part of the France squad that won the 2018 World Cup title by defeating Croatia in the final. The same year, Varane’s Real Madrid won their 13th Champions League title by beating Liverpool in the final.
