This Viral Painting is not From Lagos Market

Lagospedia @lagospedia, shared an image of a viral painting of a market tagging it as an open market in Mushin Lagos.

Verdict

Misleading, the viral painting is not an open market in Mushin Lagos but it is Kabile Central Market, Uganda.

Lagospedia @lagospedia, shared an image of a viral painting of market tagging it as an open market in Mushin Lagos.

 

The post has garnered 180 reposts, over 800 likes and 57 quotes or comments as at press time.

The image of the painting has been shared by different users on the microblogging platform with many wondering where it originates from whilst admiring its beauty. It has however been tied to different locations such as Nigeria and Kenya. Some even suggested that it is an AI generated image.

 

Verification

FactCheckAfrica did a reverse image search using Google Lens to ascertain the origin of the painting. The search result led us to different sources but upon careful observation of the painting, we came across the watermark bolfly inscribed as ‘THE SUNSET TRAVELER’

 

Thereafter we did a Google Search of the watermark and it led us to the X page of Sunset Traveler, whose owner is Daphine Naahwera from Uganda.

 

According to her, she is a professional Marketer and Certified digital Marketer who is passionate about tourism and also spécialisé in destination Marketing among other things.

 

Writing further Naahwera described herself also described herself as an artist, who loves color, it’s the reason why she’s able to edit great pictures.

 

 

Naahwera made the painting of the viral image on December 22nd 2023. In a post on the Sunset Traveler’s page on X, the painting was captioned “Kabale Central Market. A grocery dream come true”

 

The post has since garnered 442 reposts, over 2k likes and 125 quotes.

 

Kabile Central Market is located in Kabale Municipal Council Uganda. The construction to upgrade the market started in December 2019 and it was funded by the World Bank under the Markets and Agricultural Trade Improvement program – MATIP III.

The reconstructed market was finally handed handover to the government in December 2022. According to MONITOR, it has the capacity to accomodate 1,090 vendors is composed of 494 lockup shops, 20 bulk stores, 345 stalls, 76 matooke pitches, 20 fish shops, 10 chicken cages, 12 kitchen cooking units, 30 toilets, 12 bathrooms, 10 urinals, CCTV cameras and a police station among others.

 

Sanwo-Olu’s Media Aide Debunks the Claim

In addition, the Senior Special Assistant to the Lagos State Governor on New Media, Jubril Gawat has debunked the post.

 

According to him, the image is not from Mushin, the state however have something similar.

 

“This image is not from Mushin pls. We have something similar but this particular picture is not from there.” He posted.

 

Recall that the Lagos State Governor, Babjide Sanwo-Olu had recently commissioned the middle-level Fresh Food Agro Hub in Mushin, expanding the state’s food supply chain.

 

Conclusion

The claim is misleading, FactCheck Africa can confirm that the viral image is a painting that originates from Kabile Central Market, Uganda and not from Mushin, Lagos or Kenya as claimed by many.
