Fact-Check: Is Kwara State Government Offering N43,000 As New Minimum Wage?

Verdict 

The Claim that Kwara State is offering N43,000 as minimum wage is False! Our findings show that Kwara State is yet to reveal the minimum wage as purported by the claimant.

An X user, identified as Ayekooto who tweets with @DeeOneAyekooto posted on his X handle, the list of the exact minimum wages that each state consisting of 36 States of the Federal Republic of Nigeria is offering to pay its workers.

The post archived here shows the list of the 36 Nigerian states with the amount each state is paying as purported by the poster.

Recall that the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and Trade Union Congress (TUC) launched a strike over failed minimum wage negotiation with the Federal Government of Nigeria. 

The NLC requested N615,000 new minimum wage from the FGN, stating that the strike will continue until the new minimum wage is approved.

On these premises, this X user, Ayekooto posted the amount of money each state is offering as minimum wage.

As of the time of this filling this report, the post has generated over 4,000 likes, 1,668 reposts and 1,000,000 views at the time of writing this check.

The veracity of this claim is what prompted FactCheckAfrica to establish the truth of the matter.

Verification

To verify this claim, FactCheckAfrica contacted Mallam Rafiu Ajakaye, the Chief Press Secretary (CPS) to the Kwara State Government. 

The CPS said that Kwara State has not yet revealed the new minimum wage as claimed and anything that has to do with that will be officially disclosed. 

Also, we checked through the official accounts of Lagos State, Kano State,  Ogun State and Ekiti State on X and Facebook simultaneously. However, we couldn’t see any developments regarding the new minimum wage. 

While reacting to the claimant, Ayekooto on X, the Kwara State Chief Press Secretary said, “Please note that this is FAKE NEWS as far as Kwara is concerned.”

Conclusion

The claim that Kwara State is offering N43,000 as the new minimum wage is False!
