Upholding Truth: Journalistic Ethics During Elections

BY: Mustapha Lawal

As Nigeria braces for the gubernatorial elections in Edo and Ondo states, the role of the media becomes increasingly critical.

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has reiterated the importance of factual and accurate reporting. Journalists have an ethical obligation to provide unbiased, truthful coverage of electoral activities, ensuring the public receives reliable information.

In an era where misinformation can easily undermine public trust, the media must act as a bulwark against fake news and disinformation. Prof Mahmood Yakubu, Chairman of INEC, emphasized this during the 3rd quarterly consultative meeting with media representatives

He reminded journalists of their professional duty to uphold the highest standards of accuracy and integrity in their reporting, stating, “I urge you to fully comply with the Nigerian media code of election coverage.”

Yakubu also urged media organizations to expedite their accreditation processes to ensure comprehensive coverage of the elections. This timely accreditation will enable journalists to cover the elections thoroughly, contributing to transparent and credible electoral processes. “As the Edo state governorship approaches, I wish to remind media organisations that the portal for media accreditation is still open,” he noted.

The media’s role extends beyond mere reporting; it includes safeguarding the democratic process. By adhering to the Nigerian media code of election coverage and INEC guidelines, journalists help maintain the integrity of elections, fostering public confidence in democratic institutions.

Chris Isiguzo, President of the Nigeria Union of Journalists, highlighted the recent Supreme Court judgment granting autonomy to local governments as a significant step towards strengthening democracy at the grassroots level. This development underscores the importance of accurate media coverage, ensuring that such milestones are communicated effectively to the public. “Local governments are the closest tier of government to the people, and their autonomy is crucial for effective governance and development,” Isiguzo remarked.

As we approach these pivotal elections, it is incumbent upon journalists to remember their vital role in society. They must navigate the challenges of reporting in a digital age, where misinformation is rampant, by committing to ethical journalism that prioritizes truth and accountability. This commitment not only supports the democratic process but also reinforces the media’s role as a trusted source of information for the public.

At FactCheckAfrica, we remain dedicated to promoting accurate and ethical journalism.
