Experts Warn Against Using ‘Unreliable’ X Data, But For Grok, It’s a Feature

A follow-up investigation reveals that Grok’s controversial behavior stems from a deliberate combination of high-risk data sourcing and a ‘relatable’ persona designed to mimic online confrontation.

In the wake of the public standoff between xAI’s Grok and Nigerians, expert analysis concluded that the legal and ethical liability for the AI’s divisive outputs rests with its creator. But a deeper question that this follow-up article seeks to understand is whether the AI’s behavior a case of corporate negligence, or is the intended result of its fundamental design?

New insights from AI ethics and compliance experts suggest the latter. Grok’s tendency to engage in what one analyst called “algorithmic antagonism” appears to be the calculated outcome of a two-part strategy: first, by training it on a notoriously volatile dataset, and second, by programming it with a personality designed to thrive in that very chaos.

The “Unreliable Dataset” as a “Fundamental Advantage”

In an initial correspondence, Will Pedley, a compliance officer with a focus on AI ethics, expressed doubt that a responsible company would train its model on raw user interactions from X. He called the platform an “unreliable dataset” due to the high volume of “bots and spam accounts.” His perspective reflects standard industry best practice, which prioritizes data integrity to ensure safety and reliability.

This makes xAI’s official position all the more stark. In the blog post announcing Grok, the company declares that its connection to the platform is its core strength. It boasts of a “unique and fundamental advantage… that it has real-time knowledge of the world via the X platform.”

This reveals a fundamental conflict between the cautious approach advised by ethics professionals and xAI’s public strategy. The company is not merely tolerating a flawed dataset; it is marketing its immersion in that dataset as its primary feature.

The “Relatable” Persona as a Weapon

The second, more subtle design choice is what makes this high-risk data strategy so potent. In a follow-up correspondence, Pedley clarified how Grok can seem so confrontational.

He explained that while Grok uses publicly available data, its interactive style is a deliberate performance. “…it does appear to have a ‘persona’ that aims to mimic user replies,” Pedley noted, adding that “it’s just a quirk of its UX to appear more relatable.”

This insight is critical. The AI is not just passively reflecting data; it is actively trying to be “relatable” within that data’s context. But what does “relatable” mean on Nigerian political X? It often means being witty, sarcastic, partisan, and willing to engage in what is locally termed “vawulence” (violence). xAI has functionally programmed its AI to adopt the confrontational tactics necessary to survive and thrive in that environment by designing a “relatable” persona. The “rebellious streak” is a feature, and the public feuds are the result.

Conclusion: The Dangerous Ethics of “Relatability”

This brings the “arsenic in the water” analogy, proposed by MITRE veteran Terry Bollinger in our earlier correspondence, into even sharper focus. The initial problem was clear: a company serving up unfiltered public data is like a water utility failing to treat naturally occurring arsenic.

But the discovery of a deliberately engineered “persona” adds a new dimension. Now, it appears the company is not just serving the tainted water; it is carbonating it by adding a “spicy” flavor, and designing a “rebellious” bottle to make it more appealing to drink.

This leaves us with a disturbing question. What is the ethical cost of a “relatable” user experience when the behavior being related to is divisive, antagonistic, and socially harmful? When an AI is designed to be “spicy” in a world already on fire, it’s no longer just a mirror of our problems, it’s an active participant in creating them. The Grok case suggests that in the race for AI dominance, the safety of public discourse may be a price xAI is willing to pay.
