Debunked: The Truth Behind the Viral WhatsApp ‘AI Spying’ Warning Spreading in Nigeria
By: Ibraheem Muhammad Mustapha
A message circulating widely among users in Nigeria claims that a new setting called “Advanced Chat Privacy” must be turned on to prevent artificial intelligence from accessing personal messages and phone data. FactcheckAfrica investigated the claim.
Claim:
A viral WhatsApp message states that group admins must enable a feature called “Advanced Chat Privacy.” It warns that if this is not done, “all AI will legally access into all group chat members messages and personal HP n to everyone phone.” The message includes instructions on how to find and enable this setting.
Verdict: FALSE!
Full Text:
The viral message, with minor variations, reads as follows:
“Admins please turn on advance privacy in this group. Whatsapp group chat is under AI cybersecurity challenges, each whatsapp group admin please switch on Advance Chat Privacy , otherwise all AI will legally access into all group chat members messages and personal HP n to everyone phone. Even 1 to 1 whatsapp chat also need to switch on Advance Chat Privacy too▶️ Open a group chat ▶️ Click on the three dots at the top right of the group page. ▶️ Click on group info ▶️ Scroll down on the group info page and click on ‘Advanced Chat Privacy’ Turn it on.”
Verification:
To verify this claim, we broke down the investigation into three parts: verifying the existence of the feature, understanding its actual purpose, and evaluating the alleged threat.
Does the “Advanced Chat Privacy” setting exist?
Yes. Our investigation confirms that the setting mentioned in the message, “Advanced Chat Privacy,” is a real feature in the latest version of WhatsApp introduced back in April this year. It can be found within the information page of any individual chat. This use of a real feature is what makes the viral message so convincing, but it is also where the truth ends. The reason the message gives for enabling the setting is completely incorrect.
What is the true purpose of this feature?
According to official documentation from WhatsApp and its parent company, Meta, the feature is designed to give users more control over the content within a specific chat. When it is enabled for a chat, it prevents the conversation history from being exported, stops media like photos and videos from automatically saving to a phone’s main gallery, and restricts the use of Meta’s own integrated AI assistant within that chat. It is a tool designed to manage how chat participants handle the conversation, not to protect against an external threat.
Can AI read your other messages if this setting is off?
The central claim that an AI can read your messages is made impossible by WhatsApp’s end-to-end encryption (E2EE) security feature. This protection is on by default for all personal chats and calls. It works by locking your messages in a way that only the sender and the receiver have the special key to unlock and read them. This means that no one, including WhatsApp, can intercept and view the content of your private communications.
Conclusion
The claim that you must enable “Advanced Chat Privacy” to prevent AI from reading your messages is FALSE. The viral message is a hoax that misrepresents a real feature to create unnecessary fear. All personal WhatsApp messages are already protected by default end-to-end encryption, which makes them unreadable to any third party. Users should ignore and delete this misleading message.
