FACT-CHECK: 2022 Goodluck Jonathan Video on Peter Obi Falsely Shared as Endorsement for 2027

Claim:

A video of former Nigerian President, Goodluck Jonathan, has resurfaced online with claims that he endorsed Peter Obi. 

Verdict:

The claim that the former president endorsed Peter Obi is Misleading!

Full Text:

Users on Facebook and X have begun recirculating a video of Jonathan speaking about Peter Obi on his presidential aspirations. Facebook users such as Anambra Current News. Likewise, on X users such as POGrassRootM, and Dee_9889 have also recirculated the video with the slug caption “GOODLUCK JONATHAN BACKS PETER OBI”.

The same claim was also found on a YouTube page named “Voice of the People 90.3 FM” claiming that the former Nigerian President has endorsed Peter Obi, playing an audio clip of Jonathan’s voice.

The claim follows an indoor consultation by the NDC Presidential Aspirant – Obi ahead of the Presidential election with the former Nigerian President. 

Verification:

To verify this claim, FactCheckAfrica conducted a Google Reverse Image search and found out that the video in circulation is not recent.  The video was published on Channels TV YouTube page during a courtesy visit of Peter Obi to the Former Nigerian President in Abuja on September 15, 2022. Also, the audio played during a radio broadcast as viewed on the YouTube page is the audio of the video published by Channels TV during the courtesy visit in 2022.

Conclusion: 

Following our findings through available tools and media platforms, FactCheckAfrica can confirm that Former Nigerian President, Goodluck Jonathan did not endorse Peter Obi as presidential candidate.
