FACT-CHECK: Fabricated Newspaper Falsely Claims Tinubu Said Petrol Will Sell for ₦5,000 per Litre From May 29, 2027

BY: Abdulrasheed Akere

Claim:

A viral claim ascribed to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu says: “Petrol price will sell for #5,000 per liter starting May 29, 2027.”

Verdict:

The claim that Petrol price will sell for #5,000 per liter starting May 29, 2027 is fabricated.

Full Text:

A claim has been circulating online asserting that Petrol price will sell for #5,000 per liter starting May 29, 2027. The claim appeared in a newspaper which resembled that of the Nigerian Tribune. The head of the newspaper shows The Daily Tribune and the headline says, “Tinubu: Petrol price will sell for #5,000 per liter starting May 29, 2027.”

The claim has gained widespread attention and is being reshared by users on different social media platforms. However, FactCheckAfrica observed several inconsistencies in the newspaper and decided to factcheck it. One of the noticeable errors in the newspaper is that it is dated Thursday, May  27, 2027 which is a day that has never come.

Verification:

FactCheckAfrica subjected the claim’s image to Google Reverse Image and found out different visual matches which contradict the Nigerian Tribune’s newspaper format. The original Tribune’s newspaper usually carries NIGERIAN TRIBUNE on the front page, not The Daily Tribune as found on the claim’s image. The text font used for the claim is also contrary to what Nigerian Tribune is known for. Also, the logo of Nigerian Tribune is also missing on the claim’s image which indicates fabrication. The placement of date, establishment date, arrangement of news headlines are other notable things that contradict the newspaper.

Also, President Tinubu is the flag bearer of the All Progressive Congress (APC) which uses broom as its logo but the newspaper displayed his image on a background that contains an umbrella which is the logo of People’s Democratic Party (PDP).

We reviewed websites of reputable media outlets including Nigerian Tribune but found no such news published. We found out that Nigerian Tribune is aware of the misinformation issues affiliated to its organization and thereby published an analysis to that effect. The analysis was published on September 03, 2026 and titled: “How to identify genuine Nigerian Tribune newspaper front page.”

A review of the official X handle of the President Bola Tibinu (@officialABAT) where he used to post his administrative activities does not show any news related to the claim.

Conclusion:

After examining the claim and finding no evidence to back it, FactCheckAfrica can conclude that the claim is fabricated.
