On October 31, 2026, an X user, @Sistaliano, shared a post claiming that Peter Obi had broken his neck while exercising and was hospitalised.
“Peter Obi hospitalised after neck broken in gym. Please keep him in your prayers,” the post read, alongside an image bearing the Sahara Reporters logo.
The post attracted 48,000 views, 196 comments and 99 reposts. Some social media users also appeared to believe the claim.
One user, @olalekan0531, criticised the alleged incident, writing: “his looking for pity party. Don’t fall for these kindergarten gimmicks, people.”
On the same day, another X user, @Bayo_Bilisi, sheared the claim, questioning why Obi’s supporters were allegedly concealing the development.
“See update Obidiots are hiding from us, so Peter Obi’s neck is broken and he’s currently hospitalised? Interesting…” the post read.
He also shared a screenshot of a purported report by The Guardian, bearing the headline: “Peter Obi breaks Neck while attempting to Prove Fitness.”
The screenshot attributed the report to Guardian journalist John Akubo and gave its publication date as October 31, 2026, at 4:15 pm WAT.
Another X user, @og_beeping101, who shared the purported report, wrote: “In a bid to prove he is stronger than Tinubu, Peter Obi has broken his neck. I’m not laughing I promise.”
On November 1, @Sistaliano shared another post, which she described as an update on Obi’s condition.

“Peter Obi is recuperating well in the hospital. According to his doctor, he is expected to make a full recovery within six months. Thank you Nigerians for your prayers,” she wrote.
Similarly, @Bayo_Bilisi shared an image purportedly showing Obi in a hospital bed, raising his thumb.

“Peter Obi don drop OK picture from hospital. I thought Obidiots were denying he didn’t break his neck while trying to prove his fitness on a Gym treadmill,” he wrote.
The post had attracted more than 66,600 views, 219 comments and 138 reposts at the time of this report.
Further checks showed that the claim also spread through partisan Facebook communities. It was shared in groups such as Jagaban Disciples Mandate and circulated by regional blogs, including Igbodiuso Media.
Findings from this fact-check show that the claim that Peter Obi broke his neck while exercising and was hospitalized is false.
Onoriode Umukoro said, “Mr Peter Obi felt everything is political scores. He was mocking our performing president, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu for stating he is only visiting 12 states, including FCT, for his campaign rallies. That his governors and the campaign council will be wherever he could not visit. So he could focus on governance,”.
Verification:
In an interview with The PUNCH on Sunday, Obi’s spokesman, Idris Zekeri, dismissed the reports as false, describing the circulating images as doctored fabrications. He also confirmed that Obi was safe and had travelled for an international engagement.
“There is zero iota of truth in that rumor. No such thing happened. I was with His Excellency, Mr Peter Obi, at about 7 am today (Sunday) when he got on a flight for an international engagement,” Zekeri told The PUNCH.
“But I can assure you that he is safe, sound and in the finest state of health, mind, body, soul and spirit. He is ready to continue to engage with Nigerians as we prepare to kick out the faceless and lying APC,” he added.
Zekeri also took to his X page to further confirm that the claim was false.. He said “Ignore the nonsensical rumor of Mr. Peter Obi having a Gym accident”. Mr. Peter Obi is hale and hearty, body, mind, soul and spirit, ready to take Nigeria from consumption to production, ready to pull our out of school children back to school and ready to remove multidimensionally poor from poverty,”.
He said that the will be in Calabar for a town hall meeting on Wednesday
This reporter also checked the website of the Guardian and could find any report with the title. The reporter also examined the image purportedly showing Obi hospitalized using OpenAI’s image-verification tool. The tool returned the result: “Generated with OpenAI tools.” It also indicated that a SynthID watermark had been detected, stating: “We found a SynthID watermark that originated from OpenAI.”
This finding provides technical evidence that the image was generated using OpenAI tools. It further undermines the credibility of the image being circulated as an authentic photograph of Obi in hospital.
Conclusion:
Obi’s spokesman denied the incident, confirming that the former governor was safe and had travelled for an international engagement. John Akubo, whose name was attached to a purported Guardian report announcing the alleged injury, also denied authoring the report.
Furthermore, OpenAI’s image-verification tool identified the purported hospital photograph as generated using OpenAI tools.
These findings establish that the viral reports and accompanying hospital image do not provide credible evidence that Obi suffered a neck injury or was hospitalised.
