A letter purportedly from the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) addressed to all assistant directors/heads of branches, all local government inspectors, all corps employers and all corps members about the deployment of Prospective Corp Members (PCMs) who schooled in the East, West and South geopolitical zones to North West states for the batch A, stream 2 orientation programme is circulating on WhatsApp.

The letter which bore the signature of NYSC director general and also written on NYSC letter head specifically mentioned the Jigawa, Kaduna, Kano, Katsina, Kebbi, Sokoto, Zamfara as the states of deployment for PCMs who schooled in the East, West and South geopolitical zones of Nigeria.

Verification

FactCheckAfrica did a Google search to ascertain whether any reputable news platform reported the claim but our search for substantial evidence was to no avail.

A critical look at the letter shows that it was poorly written with wrong punctuation marks. Another look at the body also shows that it was written in a typewriter font with no clarity. We also noticed that the Director General’s full name was not found but his rank was mentioned with a wrong signature attached. These observations indicate that the letter was made up.

We also took to the verified X page of NYSC but we didn’t see any story related to the claim. However, we came across a news item on the page which may have inspired the claim.

According to the news with the headline ‘ACCEPT YOUR POSTING IN GOOD FAITH, DG TELLS CORPS MEMBERS’, the Director General of National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) Brigadier General YD Ahmed advised Corps Members to accept their posting to places of primary assignment in good faith and settle down to contribute their quota to national development.

Ahmed who was addressing Corps Members at NYSC Cross River State Orientation Camp in Obubra said the period of national service is a time when all Corps Members are expected to showcase the ideals of NYSC which centers on patriotism, integrity, efficiency, transparency and commitment.

“Accept your posting in good faith and quickly settle down in your host communities to contribute to their development.

“Choose either personal or group Community Development Service project and initiate projects that would impact positively on the lives of your hosts.

“Also try to add value to yourselves by learning a skill through the NYSC Skill Acquisition and Entrepreneurship Development programme and become job creators at the end of your service year”, the DG said.

Conclusion

It can be concluded that the purported letter from the NYSC DG is made up to skew the statement of the Director General on posting.
