On 26th of April, 2026 the Nigerian internet space saw and there was public outroar after a video surfaced which showed the killing of a 28 year old man, identified as Mene Ogidi, in broad daylight by an Assistant Superintendent of Police Nuhu Usman, in Delta State.
The two minute video showed the man sitting on the ground after allegedly being linked to a parcel containing firearms and ammunition. His hands were tied backwards, pleading for his life before being shot by a police man in mufti.
3 days later, another post surfaced on X(formerly twitter) by a verified (@AdrenalineJ004) claiming the said police officers have been arrested by soldiers who happen to be brothers to Mene Ogidi.
The tweet, posted on 29th of April, 2026 at exactly 10:31 am was a video accompanied by the caption:
“The police officer who took the life of an unarmed young man has been apprehended by soldiers claiming to be his brothers.”
The scene of the video showed a crowd of people including men dressed as soldiers, armed with guns dragging some other uniform men in the Nigerian police uniform.
As at the time of writing this report, the video has been viewed over 2 million times with 3,784 reposts, more than 22,300 likes and 4,899 bookmarks.
In response to the tweet, a verified user Esther Chinaza (@Esichy) said, “The same treatment should be given to him, fire him on his legs first the same way he did to the young guy and it should be done in public so as others can learn and stop behaving like animals.”
A cross section of comments on the post also showed pleasure in the said arrest and hope that the perpetrators of the evil act do not escape justice.
On the contrary, a verified user Stephen KN Smith (@stephensmiith6) expressed his displeasure about the potential falsehood the video is spreading saying, “See how pathetic you are. This is an old video. We shouldn’t be chasing clouts oga.”
Supporting this view, another verified account with the name Call for World Peace 2026 (@SunmolaIdowu) said, “This is false and misinformation. Your account should be reported for false information.”
As a result of the back and forth of the comments on the video and the potential to cause misinformation, Fact Check Africa decided to verify the claim.
Verification:
A search across credible media platforms was conducted by FactCheckAfrica. The result revealed that there were reports that the officer, an assistant superintendent of police, Usman Nuhu has been arrested and transferred to the force headquarters in Abuja for disciplinary action. This was contained in a statement issued by Bright Edafe, police spokesperson in Delta. However, there was no video release of how the officer and his team were arrested to support the earlier claim.
Going further with the verification, FactCheckAfrica carried a reverse image search on keyframes from the video. The result indicated that the footage surfaced before the Delta incident. One of the earlier emergence of the video in the media was on 8th of March, 2026 which amounts to 49 days before the incident. While we could not accurately reference the video to the incident behind it, the presence of the video in the media before the incident shows it was used out of context.
Conclusion:
The claim that soldiers arrested policemen responsible for the killing of Mene Ogidi is Delta is misleading. While the officer and his team have truly been arrested, there is no official evidence that they were arrested by soldiers or in the way portrayed in the video. Its circulation in this context reflects a misrepresentation of footage to fit a misleading narrative.
