An X user, @Thepentane_, shared a video purportedly showing former presidential candidate Peter Obi and former President Olusegun Obasanjo playing together at an event, with Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu also present.
“Peter Obi and Obasanjo were seen playing at an exclusive event this evening while Sanwo Olu sat and watch them.. This is fun 😂😂,” the user wrote.
The post has garnered over 4,000 likes and 565 reposts on X and it can also be found here, here, here, here and here.
FactCheckAfrica seeks to establish whether the video was recorded recently, as claimed, given the potential for recycled footage to mislead the public about events involving prominent political figures and their current engagements.
Verification:
To verify the claim, FactCheckAfrica extracted screenshots of keyframes from the viral video and conducted a reverse image search using Google Lens.
The search led to a PUNCH report published on June 21, 2026, titled “Sanwo-Olu, Obi, Obasanjo honour Obi of Onitsha at 85”.
According to the report, the event was held in honour of the Obi of Onitsha, Igwe Nnaemeka Achebe, who celebrated his 85th birthday on Friday, June 19, 2026, at The Delborough Hotel, Victoria Island, Lagos State.
“The event was well attended by top dignitaries, political leaders, traditional rulers, business executives, and other prominent Nigerians who gathered to celebrate the monarch,” the report stated.
FactCheckAfrica also found a report by the Nigerian Tribune corroborating the occasion here.
Therefore, the reports provide context for the footage, linking the gathering attended by Peter Obi, former President Olusegun Obasanjo and Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu to the Obi of Onitsha’s 85th birthday celebration in June 2026, rather than establishing that it occurred on yesterday evening.
Conclusion:
The claim that Peter Obi and former President Olusegun Obasanjo were seen playing at an exclusive event yesterday evening is misleading.
