FACT-CHECK: X User Shares Misleading Footage as Evidence of the Ogbomoso Rescue Operation
BY: Oluwaseye Ogunsanya
Claim:
An X user claimed that a video showing a military armored vehicle patrol serves as visual evidence of the July 10, 2026, rescue of 44 pupils and teachers abducted from Oriire Local Government Area, Ogbomoso, Oyo State.
Verdict:
Misleading
Claim:
An X user named @ArmyLucifer001 shared a video depicting a dashboard perspective inside a moving military armored vehicle navigating a dry savanna landscape.

The attached caption presents the video as physical evidence of the high-profile joint security operation led by Major General CR Nnebeife, which successfully rescued 44 school children and teachers on July 10, 2026.
The victims had been held in captivity for 56 days following their abduction in the Oriire Local Government Area of Oyo State on May 15, 2026.
Verification:
To verify the origin of the video, an extensive visual evaluation and digital footprint audit were conducted which led us to the original video uploaded as a Facebook Reel by a digital content creation page Military Gallery with the Pidgin caption “you go first think say nah AI God bless Nigerian army”. The footage documents a routine long-range reconnaissance patrol by the Nigerian Armed Forces inside a domestic Proforce Ara Mine-Resistant Ambush Protected (MRAP) vehicle.
Further analysis of the footage revealed a Sudano-Sahelian landscape characterised by dry, sparse shrubland and dust-laden, low-canopy trees. These features are more consistent with the Sambisa Forest and Mandara Mountain corridors in Nigeria’s North-East geopolitical zone than with the vegetation found in Oyo State, indicating that the footage was likely recorded over a thousand kilometres away.
According to the official statement regarding the Ogbomoso rescue operation by the Nigerian Army, the 44 victims were unconditionally released after extensive tactical pressure and surgical arrests disrupted the kidnappers’ network. Following their liberation, they were immediately transported to a medical facility for examination before being received by Governor Seyi Makinde. No official footage from inside a front-line armored vehicle blast frame was released as a visual log of the rescue event as at the time of writing this report.
Conclusion:
Our analysis found that the claim linking this armoured vehicle video to the Ogbomoso rescue operation is misleading. The footage does not originate from the Southwest rescue operation. Instead, it depicts a separate anti-terrorism deployment in Northern Nigeria and has been recirculated out of context to capitalise on the widespread attention surrounding the successful rescue of the abducted teachers and students in Oyo State.
