BEWARE! INEC Debunks Viral Recruitment Advert, Warns Against Fake Portal

By Oluwatoyin Hawal Momolosho

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has dismissed a viral social media advert claiming that the Commission is recruiting for various positions through the website ‘inecrecruitment.com.’ INEC has described the claim as fraudulent and warned Nigerians not to fall victim.

Claim:

A viral advertorial circulating online claims that INEC is recruiting and directs applicants to apply via inecrecruitment.com.

Verdict: False!

INEC is not recruiting. The advert and the portal are fake.

Verification:

On September 18, 2025, INEC used its verified X (formerly Twitter) handle to issue a public disclaimer regarding the viral recruitment advert. The Commission clearly stated that it was not recruiting and cautioned citizens against falling prey to fraudsters. In the post, “The Commission IS NOT recruiting. Do not fall victim to the antics of criminal elements.”

The electoral body further clarified that it has no link to the portal ‘inecrecruitment.com,’ which is being circulated on social media. According to the Commission, its only official online platform remains www.inecnigeria.org.

Independent news organisations, including The Guardian and Punch, also reported on the development, corroborating INEC’s position and warning Nigerians to disregard the viral advert. Their reports claimed that the advert was part of a broader pattern of fraudulent recruitment exercises targeting unsuspecting citizens.

Context:

Misinformation around government recruitment exercises is common in Nigeria, with fraudsters frequently creating fake websites and adverts to exploit jobseekers. These scams often go viral on social media, where false claims spread faster than corrections. By impersonating credible institutions like INEC, scammers exploit public trust and desperation for jobs.

This is why fact-checking such claims is crucial. It not only helps to debunk falsehoods but also protects citizens from financial loss and identity theft. INEC has repeatedly stressed that any legitimate recruitment will only be announced on its official website and verified communication channels.

Conclusion:

The claim that INEC is recruiting through inecrecruitment.com is false. The advert is a scam designed to deceive the public. Nigerians are advised to disregard the fraudulent portal and rely exclusively on INEC’s verified communication channels for accurate information.
