DEBUNKED: Claim that 200 Naira Levy Will be Paid to NANS as a Requirement for NYSC Mobilization is False!

The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has entered into an agreement with the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) to collect a ₦200 levy from Nigerian students as a requirement for NYSC mobilisation.

Verdict:

False! There is no evidence or any  official statement either from NANS or NYSC substantiating the claim

A viral claim alleged that the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has entered into an agreement with NYSC to collect a ₦200 levy from Nigerian students with the  payment of the levy being linked to their mobilisation for the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC).

Reacting to the claim, the NYSC denied having any agreement with NANS regarding the proposed levy or making payment of the levy a requirement for mobilisation.

In a statement issued on August 11, 2026, the NYSC said it had not discussed, agreed to, or entered into any Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with NANS regarding the collection of any levy from students in connection with mobilisation for national service.

“The attention of the Management of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) has been drawn to a viral publication titled, “NANS Moves to Collect N200 Levy from Nigerian Students, Links Dues to NYSC Mobilisation,” NYSC wrote.

“The NYSC wishes to state unequivocally that it has not, at any time, discussed, agreed to, or entered into any Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) regarding the collection of any levy from students in connection with mobilisation for national service,” it added.

Verification:

FactCheck Africa’s findings about the viral  claim that  NYSC  has  entered into an agreement with NANS to collect #200 fee from Nigerian students as a requirement for NYSC mobilisation revealed that the claim is false.

The NYSC’s official website identifies its Corps Mobilisation Department as the department responsible for coordinating the mobilisation of eligible Nigerian graduates for national service.

Its responsibilities include collating Senate/Academic Board-approved result lists from Corps Producing Institutions (CPIs), vetting prospective corps members’ data and preparing mobilisation timetables.

The NYSC’s registration guidelines also state that locally trained graduates must have their names on Senate or Academic Board-approved result lists submitted by their institutions before they can access the NYSC registration portal.

More importantly, the NYSC, through its Director of Information and Public Relations, Caroline Embu,  distanced itself from the alleged connection with NANS.

According to the NYSC, its mobilisation process is conducted through established official channels involving the Scheme and the Heads of Corps Producing Institutions. 

It further stated that mobilisation is neither linked to nor contingent upon the activities of any student association or organisation.

The NYSC therefore charged the prospective corps members and students to disregard information suggesting that payment of a levy to NANS or any other association is required for NYSC mobilisation.

Conclusion:

The claim that NYSC had an agreement with NANS to make payment of a ₦200 levy as a requirement for NYSC mobilisation is false.

Available evidence shows that NYSC’s mobilisation process is handled through its established procedures and collaboration with Corps Producing Institutions. 

The Scheme has also expressly disassociated itself from entering into any agreement or MoU with NANS regarding the alleged proposed levy.
