EXPLAINER: The Truth Behind the ‘Fuel Delivery Riders’ Video Linked to Dangote Refinery

By: Aminat Miskilu and Abimbola Success

A viral claim circulated widely in recent days on social media, suggesting that the Dangote Petroleum Refinery is working with an outfit, Fuelup, to distribute petrol through dispatch riders. The Dangote company publicly denied the claim with a version of the video carrying a boldly written caption: “FAKE.”

The original video, which gained traction online on Sunday, sparked mixed reactions of both public applause and safety security concerns. The clip started with an advertisement showing a man stuck in fuel queues who attempts to avoid the delay by placing an order for petrol through a WhatsApp chat. Moments later, a rider arrives with a mini fuel dispenser named Fuelup attached to his bike, which the dispatch rider then used to dispense petrol into the customer’s vehicle.

Following the claim, Dangote refinery posted the video on its official social media channels refuting the assertion. This denial was corroborated by independent news sources such as The Punch, quoting clearly the response of the Group Chief Communication Officer of the Company, Anthony Chiejina, who said the refinery is not associated with the content. “Fake! We are not in any way associated with this,” he added.

The widespread debate that trailed this video after Dangote company declared it as fake, included suspicion of the use of AI to create the clip, tagged ‘FuelUp,’

Following the Dangote denial, FactCheck Africa researched the outfit where the claim originated. We discovered that Fuelup has, in fact, released a press statement signed by the management, which states:

“In light of the conversations circulating online regarding our recent post, we consider it important to provide clarity and reassure our customers and the general public of our uncompromising commitment to transparency and industry compliance.

Fuelup was founded on a simple vision to make access to high-quality fuel fast, safe and convenient for individuals and businesses who rely on uninterrupted power. Our operations, product sourcing, and safety procedures reflect this commitment. With regard to the now-deleted post mentioning Dangote products, we acknowledge the concerns raised. The reference was made strictly to indicate that the fuel supplied is from a reliable source. We have been delivering fuel from only Dangote-enabled stations.

We appreciate the Dangote Group for reaching out to initiate a conversation, and we are fully cooperating to ensure that communications going forward are clearer. Furthermore, safety remains at the heart of our operations. Our delivery bikes are equipped with fire extinguishers, and our personnel undergo continuous training in handling, dispensing, and emergency response procedures in line with established standards.

As we refine our messaging, improve internal processes, and strengthen our operational framework, we reassure the public that the quality of the fuel we deliver is topnotch, consistent and reliable. We remain committed to delivering value without compromising on safety and integrity. Fuelup exists to keep your work, business, and daily life in motion. We remain dedicated to serving you better as we continue to evolve and uphold this trust placed in us. Fuelup, Fueling Your Motion.

Conclusion:

The viral claim suggesting a direct business partnership between the Dangote Petroleum Refinery and the mobile fuel distribution service Fuelup is FALSE.

While the original social media post created the impression of a formal partnership, subsequent clarification by Fuelup confirmed that the reference to “Dangote products” was an unclear communication intended only to indicate that they source fuel from stations supplied by the Dangote system. Fuelup has acknowledged the error and apologised for the confusion. The Dangote Group has maintained that they are “not in any way associated with” the mobile distribution service.
