Misleading. FactCheckAfrica found no evidence that bandits publicly handed over the late general’s body to his family as claimed. Analysis of the viral image also revealed multiple indicators consistent with AI-generated content.

The death of retired Major General Rabe Abubakar, former Director of Defence Information, has attracted widespread public attention following reports that he died while in captivity after being abducted alongside his wife in Katsina State.

Against this backdrop, a viral social media post shared by Guardian News Nigeria, Ripples Nigeria and subsequently amplified by several users across platforms (Facebook, Instagram and X), including former senator Dino Melaye, claimed that heavily armed bandits delivered the deceased military officer’s body to his family before leaving the area without resistance.
The post was accompanied by an image depicting armed men surrounding a coffin while a woman identified as the late general’s wife appeared to receive the body. The former senator caption read: “Heavily armed bandits handed over the body of General Rabe yesterday morning in Katsina and left for the neighboring forest of Matazu, unchallenged! What country???”
The image also carried a Hausa-language inscription (Masu garkuwa da mutane suna mika gawar Janar Rabe Abubakar ga iyalansa, tare da sakin matarsa. ALLAH YAJIKANSA DA RAHAMA إنا لله وانا اليه راجعون) that literally translates to (The kidnappers are handing over the body of General Rabe Abubakar to his family, along with the release of his wife. MAY ALLAH BLESS HIM WITH MERCY I am to God and to Him I will return) suggesting that the kidnappers released the general’s wife while handing over his remains to family members.
The claim quickly gained traction online, generating thousands of reactions, comments and shares across multiple platforms.
Given the sensitivity of the incident and its potential implications for public confidence in Nigeria’s security response, FactCheckAfrica investigated.
Verification:
FactCheckAfrica subjected the viral image to a detailed visual review and found several inconsistencies commonly associated with AI-generated imagery.
A close examination showed unusual spatial relationships between individuals in the scene. Several figures appeared disconnected from one another despite supposedly participating in a highly emotional event. Their body positioning, gaze directions, and interactions lacked the natural coherence typically observed in authentic photographs.
Further analysis revealed distortions around one of the firearms depicted in the image. The barrel of a weapon appeared to intersect unnaturally with the coffin, creating a visual anomaly frequently associated with AI-generated content.
FactCheckAfrica also compared the woman portrayed in the image with previously published videos of the late general and his wife during captivity. The facial features and physical appearance of the woman in the viral image did not appear consistent with publicly available footage of Mrs. Abubakar.

To further assess the image’s authenticity, FactCheckAfrica conducted an independent AI-detection assessment on the image. An analysis conducted using ImageWhisperer similarly flagged the image as likely AI-generated. The verdict is based on the reasoning that Image Whisperer forensic models caught patterns invisible to the eye. Models split: Commercial Scanner (99%) flagged AI; SPAI (0%), CommFor (2%) cleared it. No camera metadata found.

Analysis by ImageWhisperer (imagewhisperer.org), 2026-06-15 09:24 UTC, 14 detection models. Verdict: AI-Generated.
According to the tool evidence supporting the verdict of AI generated image include: Commercial AI scanner flagged this image (99% AI probability) and signals that did not change the verdict include: Frequency analysis (SPAI) found normal patterns (0%), Generator diversity model (CommFor) cleared (2%), AI scene analysis found no visual anomalies, HiFi-Net++ forensic classifier found no forgery evidence (0%), Leading commercial AI scanner returned 68% (below its flagging threshold), as well as No EXIF metadata (consistent with AI generation or social media sharing).
Beyond the image itself, FactCheckAfrica reviewed official statements and credible reports concerning the circumstances surrounding General Abubakar’s death.
On June 13, 2026, the Katsina State Government announced that the retired military officer had died while in captivity. According to a statement issued by the state’s Commissioner for Internal Security and Home Affairs, Nasiru Mu’azu, the former general reportedly died from complications related to diabetes and hypertension while being held by his abductors. The statement confirmed his death but did not state that armed bandits publicly returned his body to relatives.
Similarly, a statement from the Defence Headquarters, issued by the Director of Defence Information, Major General Samaila Uba, acknowledged the death and outlined efforts made to secure his release. The statement contained no reference to bandits physically handing over the body before retreating unhindered.
FactCheckAfrica further reviewed media reports published following the announcement of the general’s death. None of the reports examined contained evidence supporting the claim that bandits openly returned the body to the family. In fact, reports available at the time indicated that the late general’s wife remained in captivity, directly contradicting the narrative presented in the viral image.
Additional questions surrounding the circumstances of the body’s recovery emerged from comments made by the deceased’s family.
Speaking during an interview with DW Hausa, Ishak Rabe, one of the late general’s sons, stated that the family had no direct knowledge of how the body was recovered. “It is only the state government that can explain how the body was recovered,” he said.
His statement further underscores the absence of publicly available evidence supporting claims that the body was formally handed over by armed kidnappers.
Conclusion:
The claim that heavily armed bandits openly returned the body of retired Major General Rabe Abubakar to his family in Katsina State is misleading. While authorities have confirmed the former military officer’s death in captivity, no credible evidence supports the narrative that his body was publicly handed over by the kidnappers. FactCheckAfrica’s review further found that the viral image accompanying the claim bears multiple characteristics of AI-generated content and should not be treated as reliable evidence of the events it purports to depict.
