FactCheckAfrica Commemorates Global Media and Information Literacy Week 2025

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Theme: “Minds Over AI – Media and Information Literacy in Digital Spaces”

Abuja, Nigeria – October 2025

FactCheckAfrica joins the global community to mark the 2025 Global Media and Information Literacy (MIL) Week, themed “Minds Over AI – Media and Information Literacy in Digital Spaces.” The celebration underscores the urgent need to strengthen citizens’ capacity to think critically, verify information, and use technology responsibly in an age defined by artificial intelligence and digital communication.

In recent years, FactCheckAfrica has positioned itself as a leading advocate for truth, transparency, and digital empowerment across Africa’s media ecosystem. Through its Digital Rights Conferences, the organisation has provided a platform for journalists, educators, students, and policymakers to examine the intersections between human rights, technology, and information access. These engagements have fostered deeper conversations on digital responsibility, online safety, and ethical communication in the digital age.

A key part of FactCheckAfrica’s ongoing advocacy is the integration of fact-checking and digital literacy education into the national curriculum at both secondary and tertiary levels. By promoting this initiative, the organisation aims to build a generation of young Nigerians who can confidently question, evaluate, and create media content with discernment.

Reflecting its commitment to innovation, FactCheckAfrica developed MyAiFactChecker, an artificial intelligence tool designed to help users verify claims and detect misinformation in real time. This initiative demonstrates the organisation’s belief that AI can be a force for good when directed toward promoting accuracy, accountability, and informed citizenship.

Additionally, FactCheckAfrica has hosted a series of Artificial Intelligence Fundamentals Workshops, equipping participants with the knowledge to understand AI technologies, their societal impact, and their potential in advancing media literacy and fact-checking.

Speaking on the commemoration, the Convener of FactCheckAfrica, Abideen Olasupo noted that the “Minds Over AI” theme is both a challenge and a reminder. “Technology should not think for us. Our goal is to help people use their minds to guide the machines, not the other way around. Media literacy is the foundation of responsible digital citizenship.”

As part of this year’s observance, FactCheckAfrica will host digital campaigns, online discussions, and community-based learning sessions to engage young people, educators, and professionals in exploring the promise and perils of AI in today’s media landscape.
