FCA AI Journalism Fellows Spotlight: A Conversation with Titilope Fadare

Titilope Fadare, an Assistant Production Editor based in Abuja, Nigeria, is driving innovation in African journalism through her pioneering initiative, Generative AI Journalism with Titi. Since completing the FactCheckAfrica AI Journalism fellowship, she has trained and empowered journalists, campus reporters, and NGO communicators to effectively adopt AI tools in ways that are both ethical and culturally relevant. This interview spotlights her post-fellowship work, which has focused on bridging the noticeable gap in AI adoption across African newsrooms

What have you been up to since the program ended?
I have been raising awareness on how and why journalists should embrace AI.

Can you describe a specific project, event, or activity you’ve carried out that was inspired by the fellowship?
I’ve conducted AI training for the staff of Fact Matters Nigeria and organised a personalised AI training for Abuja journalists. Additionally, I’ve launched a brand, ‘Generative AI Journalism with Titi,’ aimed at empowering African journalists and storytellers to seamlessly integrate AI into their workflow. This initiative addresses the noticeable gap in AI adoption and utilization in the African journalism landscape.

Who or what has benefited from your post-fellowship work? (e.g., students, colleagues, audience)
Practising journalists, campus reporters and some members of NGOs. Can you share any results, feedback, or success stories that followed your initiative? (e.g., number of people trained, links to content created, improved reporting, partnerships)

I have trained 25 journalists and have a growing community of Gen AI Journalists. I have also gotten comments and feedback from my followers on how my tutorials have improved their workflow and changed their mindset about AI usage. The brand was also recently spotlighted by Media Career Development Network.

What are your plans for using AI in journalism going forward?
My plan is simple. I want to help more African journalists use AI in a way that’s ethical, practical and culturally relevant. Through GenAI Journalism with Titi, I’m training journalists to use AI tools to work faster, write better without losing their voice. I’m also pushing for more local use cases, especially in African languages and underreported communities.

What kind of support or collaboration would help you take your work to the next level?
Right now, the biggest support I need is visibility on more platforms in the media and among decision makers in journalism and tech space. I am building something powerful with Generative AI Journalism with Titi but would love to scale it. I need more people, especially newsroom leaders, funders and educators to see what’s possible. Beyond that I’m open to collaborations with media organisations, journalism schools and AI developers whether it’s co-hosting training, piloting AI workflows in newsrooms or developing AI tools that reflect African realities. Lastly, a fellowship, grant or tech/media partnership that allows me to take this training model across more African countries will be immensely useful.

How would you describe the fellowship to a journalist who would love to join?
The fellowship is definitely an eye-opener that launches you into the intersection of AI and journalism.
