A viral post alleging that Peter Obi, the former governor of Anambra State, and a presidential aspirant for the 2027 Nigerian presidential election, had secured the endorsement of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) went viral on several social media platforms.

The claim was traced to an X user identified as “Mayor of Calabar.”

In his X post, the user, Mayor of Calabar, alleged that Peter Obi secured the NDC ticket with “22 million votes.”

He wrote, “Peter Obi has clinched the NDC ticket with a total of 22 million votes. APC, ntoor. Tinubu had only 10.9 million votes 😀.”

As of the time of filing this report, the post had garnered over 998,000 views

FactCheckAfrica observed that the post gained traction online, with many social users  starting to believe the claim.

Verification:

Findings by FactCheckAfrica revealed that the claim is false. As of the time of filing this report, the NDC had not conducted its presidential primary election.

According to a report by The Cable Newspaper, the party’s presidential primary is scheduled to commence on Friday, May 29, 2026, making the viral claim misleading.

Conclusion:

The claim that Peter Obi has secured the NDC presidential ticket is misleading. As of the time of this report, the NDC presidential primaries have not been conducted. The exercise is scheduled to commence on May 29, 2026.
