The post quickly circulated on social media, garnering over 329,000 views, hundreds of reposts, and thousands of engagements. The claim triggered intense speculation regarding political party switches, triggering responses from commentators who misinterpreted the post as an official move by the governor to abandon his political platform to contest under the YPP ahead of upcoming elections.

Given the potential to misinform the public regarding the official status of the executive leadership of Rivers State, FactCheckAfrica investigated the origin and accuracy of the claim.

Identity Confusion and Name Misrepresentation

A report published by Vanguard Newspaper (https://www.vanguardngr.com/2026/09/blessing-fubara-emerges-ypp-governorship-candidate/) confirms that the individual who emerged as the Young Progressives Party (YPP) governorship candidate in Rivers State is Ambassador Blessing Fubara Snr., a relative and kinsman of the governor, not the incumbent Governor Siminalayi Fubara.

According to Vanguard, Amb. Blessing Fubara Snr. secured the YPP governorship ticket for the 2027 Rivers State governorship election and officially selected Comrade Uwuma Awala as his running mate.

Visual Misrepresentation and Social Media Impact

Rather than using an image of the actual candidate, the X user paired a photo of Governor Siminalayi Fubara with a headline referencing only the surname “Fubara.”

This deliberate combination misled commentators into believing that the governor had defected from his party. Public responses to the post show online users actively debating the “move,” with some interpreting it as a strategic political maneuver and others criticizing him for abandoning his platform, all based on a false premise.

As reported by Vanguard Newspaper, the actual candidate fielded by the Young Progressives Party (YPP) is Amb. Blessing Fubara Snr., a distinct individual and kinsman of the governor. Attaching Governor Siminalayi Fubara’s image to news concerning another politician sharing the same surname presents a completely false narrative to the public.
