A post shared on X by an account identified as Joel Esom claims that CD Tenerife manager Álvaro Cervera made an emotional statement following the death of 30-year-old striker Jesús de Miguel.

According to the post, Cervera allegedly said that the coaching staff had remained awake since the incident and had moved the injured player from one hospital to another in search of oxygen and medical assistance.

The purported statement further claims that De Miguel suffered cardiac arrest and eventually died despite efforts to save his life.

It also attributes comments to Cervera criticising FC Andorra goalkeeper Jesús Owono for the challenge that resulted in the collision, suggesting that the goalkeeper should have slowed down to avoid the incident.

Additionally, the post claims that the manager announced that the team would not return to football until they had properly mourned their teammate.

The statement circulated alongside an image showing a man identified as Cervera speaking during what appears to be a press conference.

However, while the footballer’s death following the collision is confirmed, the authenticity of the remarks attributed to the manager requires independent verification.

Verification:

Findings by FactCheckAfrica establish Jesús de Miguel, 30-year-old CD Tenerife striker died on Tuesday, November 3, 2026, following a serious collision during a league match against FC Andorra the previous day.

According to Spanish public broadcaster RTVE, the incident occurred on November 2 at the Heliodoro Rodríguez López Stadium during a Segunda División encounter between both clubs.

During the closing stages of the match, FC Andorra goalkeeper Jesús Owono rushed out of his penalty area to challenge for a loose ball and collided with De Miguel, striking him in the chest with his knee. The Tenerife striker collapsed on the pitch and received emergency attention from medical personnel before being transported to hospital by ambulance.

Owono was shown a red card following the challenge, while the match was eventually abandoned because of the medical emergency.

CD Tenerife subsequently issued a medical update confirming that De Miguel had been admitted to the intensive care unit of the Hospital Universitario Nuestra Señora de la Candelaria.

On November 3, the club officially announced his death at 8:00 a.m. local time, expressing profound grief over the loss of the player.

The announcement was independently reported by Spanish news agency EFE, which confirmed that De Miguel died at the same hospital where he had been receiving intensive care. International news agency Reuters also reported his death, confirming that the incident occurred during the match against FC Andorra and that he was transported to hospital after receiving emergency treatment on the pitch.

These reports establish that the incident, hospitalisation and subsequent death are genuine. However, they do not authenticate the statement attributed to Cervera.

Further examination of contemporaneous reporting revealed an important inconsistency in the purported statement.

Spanish broadcaster Cadena SER reported on November 2 that the post-match press conferences involving both managers, Álvaro Cervera of CD Tenerife and Carles Manso of FC Andorra, were cancelled following the incident.

This is significant because the viral post presents Cervera as having made an immediate post-match statement, whereas the available reporting establishes that the scheduled press conferences did not take place.

Although this does not rule out the possibility that Cervera made comments through another channel at a later time, it means the purported statement cannot be authenticated through the post-match press conference.

Additionally, this investigation could not establish an official club communication, recorded interview or credible Spanish media report directly quoting Cervera as making the remarks reproduced in the viral post.

The investigation also examined the allegation that the coaching staff moved De Miguel between hospitals in search of oxygen and medical assistance.

On November 2, CD Tenerife issued an official medical update confirming that De Miguel had been admitted to the intensive care unit of the Hospital Universitario Nuestra Señora de la Candelaria. The club also stated that its medical personnel were monitoring his condition.

The communication, reproduced by Cadena SER, identified the hospital where the player was receiving treatment. It did not mention transferring him between hospitals, searching for oxygen at different medical facilities or encountering difficulties securing medical assistance.

Furthermore, EFE reported on November 3 that De Miguel died at the same hospital where he had been receiving intensive care since the previous night.

Reuters also confirmed that he was transported to hospital by ambulance after receiving emergency attention on the pitch.

These accounts do not corroborate the viral post’s allegation that the player was moved between multiple hospitals. Although the available reports cannot establish every detail of the medical treatment he received, they provide no credible support for the specific hospital-transfer narrative circulated online.

Another element requiring examination is the claim that Cervera announced that the team would not return to football until they had properly mourned their teammate.

An examination of football-related reporting published following De Miguel’s death confirms that some football activities were indeed suspended.

On November 3, the Royal Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) announced the postponement of scheduled Copa del Rey and Copa de la Reina matches as a mark of respect following the player’s death. The federation also suspended the presentation of an upcoming Spain Under-21 fixture.

Cadena SER subsequently reported that CD Tenerife was expected to resume its competitive activities on November 15, ahead of its scheduled match against AD Ceuta.

These developments establish that the tragedy affected football activities and that the Tenerife team was expected to take time away from competition.

However, they do not authenticate the statement attributed to Cervera or establish that he personally announced an indefinite suspension of football activities until the team had properly mourned their teammate.

The distinction between an official club decision, a report by a journalist and a direct statement from the manager is important. The viral post attributes the announcement personally to Cervera without providing evidence that he made it.

Finally, the image accompanying the viral post does not independently establish the authenticity of the quotation. Although it shows a man identified as Cervera speaking in what appears to be a press conference setting, the photograph does not establish when or where it was taken or what he said.

Conclusion:

FactCheck Africa confirms that CD Tenerife striker Jesús de Miguel died on November 3, 2026, following a collision with FC Andorra goalkeeper Jesús Owono during a league match. However, the emotional statement attributed to Tenerife manager Álvaro Cervera in the viral post remains unverified.

Credible reports confirm that the post-match press conferences were cancelled, and no reliable evidence establishes that Cervera made the alleged remarks. The post is therefore partly true but misleading, as it combines a confirmed tragedy with an unsupported statement attributed to the club’s manager.
