FAKE! Picture of Senegal Supporter with anti-colonialism Placard is AI-Generated

Claim:
A post claimed a football spectator was displaying an anti-colonialism poster during a match between the France and Senegal national teams in the ongoing 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Verdict: No media coverage found. Open-source tools flagged it as an AI-generated image.

Senegal was once France’s oldest colony in sub-Saharan Africa, and both countries have maintained a bilateral relationship since political independence in 1960.
The francophone nation was among the top ten African countries that qualified for the Federation of International Football Associations (FIFA) 2026 World Cup jointly hosted by the United States of America (USA), Canada and Mexico.
On June 16, 2026, the Senegal team lost their opening match to France in New Jersey, US.
However, while the match was ongoing, an X user with the username @oluremitinubu posted (archive here) a picture of a Senegal supporter holding a placard with bold inscriptions “Colonialism Oppression. Africa Will Not Forget”.
The post, which was shared on X (formerly Twitter), was captioned with: “World Cup play of the day – France vs Senegal – is unfolding right now, and very interesting fan is detected on Senegalese tribune: this guy holds a pretty tough anti-colonialism poster. Will he be critisized by MAGA enjoyers for such manifesto?”
The copies of the post were duplicated in the comment sections of the prominent X accounts here, here and here.
Verification:
FactCheckAfrica checked the FIFA Anti-discrimination policy guiding fans’ safety and their entrance into the stadium.
FIFA prohibits any materials, including but not limited to banners, flags, flyers, apparel and other paraphernalia that are of a political, offensive, and/or discriminatory nature. This means that, under rigorous inspection, it would be difficult for a fan to sneak in an anti-colonialism placard inside the stadium.
We reversed the image on Google back to the X user @oluremitinubu as its originator.
Taking a look at the picture, we observed that the hand holding the top-left edge of the cardboard is extremely small, lacks realistic finger joints, and appears physically disconnected from any realistic arm angle of the Senegal supporter.
The imagewhisper, an open-source image detector tool, detected the image as 99% AI-generated.

According to its analysis, the text and graphic on the cardboard sign are unnaturally sharp, flat and lack the physical texture, grain, and lighting gradients of the card backing. No camera metadata or web history was found.
We further checked on OpenAIVerify, a tool for verifying AI images, and flagged that the content was generated using its tools.
