Is a Video About Protest At Emir of Ilorin’s Palace Over Hardship TRUE?

Recently, reports show that some states in Nigeria have been protesting over the economic downturn in the country is. Reports here, and here show the states that have protested so far. 

An X user with the twitter handle @omoelerinjare posted a video on the 17th of February with the caption claiming that people are protesting at Emir’s Palace.

The tweet reads, “Breaking News: Serious protest at the Emir’s Palace in Ilorin Kwara State!

“We are Hungry, The State is Hungry”.

A lot of reactions have emancipated about the authenticity of the claim. This is why FactCheckAfrica is seeking to verify it and establish the truth about the matter.

The tweet has garnered 2,262 likes, 1682 reposts, 218 bookmarks as of the time of writing this report.

This same video was also retrieved on YouTube posted by Gistcore media yesterday with the caption: “Protest erupted at the Emir’s Palace in Ilorin, with demonstrators chanting, we are hungry.”

This post has also generated 223 views and 1 like.

Claim 

There is a serious protest at the Emir’s Palace in Ilorin, Kwara State over hardship.

Findings 

Findings show that the claim is MISLEADING. FactCheckAfrica’s research shows that the video posted by this X user is an old video which has been recurring since 2021.

Also, Abdulazeez Arowona, the Emir’s spokesperson has refuted it. Mr. Arowona claimed that that protest was before the 2019 general election.

Part of the statement reads, “We want to state categorically that the said video was part of the events that characterised and witnessed during the build-up to the 2019 general elections.”

Verdict 

The claim that Kwara State residents protested against hardship in front of the Emir’s Palace is False.
